The northeast area is home home to the most northerly of all the wine producing regions of France and probably the most famous, the Champagne region. The area also encompasses the two historic territories of Alsace and Lorraine, which have been fought over by the Germans and French for centuries.

The main city of the area is Strasbourg, known as the "crossroads to Europe" and situated on the border with Germany, close to the Rhine. Strasbourg is also the home to the European Parliment and the European Court of Human Rights.
