Poitou-CharentesThe Loire Valley : Poitou-Charentes Southwest of the Loire Valley lies the gentle landscape of Poitou-Charetes, the source of that great “drink for heroes”: Brandy. The region encompasses the mysterious region of swamplands and woods in the remarkable national park of Le Marais Poitevin and stretches to the Atlantic coast, with its atmospheric islands of Oleron and Re, and the delightful 10th century fishing village of La Rochelle, one of France’s loveliest ports and now a busy yachting centre. In Cognac you can enjoy the famous brandy of the same name. Grapes grown in the region are first turned in to wine, and then distilled to make Cognac. A number of private distilleries open their doors to visitors for tours and tasting sessions, one of the most spectacular is the 15th century Chateau des Valois. In this area you can obtain your hire car from Angouleme Railway Station and Poitiers Railway Station.
